Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is an Indian action thriller film written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss, and produced by Vipul Shah. It features Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles, along with Farhad as the antagonist in his Bollywood debut and Govinda in a special appearance. It is a remake of Murugadoss' own acclaimed Tamil film Thuppakki (2012).

Akshay Kumar’s Holiday has received positive reviews from the critics. ABP News similarly rated it 4.5/5, calling it a "fast paced, exhilarating roller coaster ride" Taran Adarsh gave 4/5 and states that it is a slick action-thriller that keeps you engrossed, enthralled and captivated all through, thanks to its fascinating premise and a watertight, razor-sharp screenplay.

The Times Of India gave the movie 3.5 rating describing it as This one applauds the jawans who live in the jaws of death, and is a 'wake up' call for all the 'sleepers' that abound. Bravo!"

So the question is not exactly how good is Akshay Kumar’s action movie Holiday, but how did they accomplish such a high request of unintentional hilarity?

The response to that question can be found in the filmmaking virtuoso of AR Murugadoss. His way to deal with silver screen is interesting – there is no reason for making a clear decent straightforward good movie, because that process does not have any mojo. We're in an ideal situation with the sketchy enchantment of Murugadoss’ imagination that enables us to enjoy a movie in which Sonakshi Sinha slaps her daddy routinely and Govinda plays an athletic senior Army commando.

He reminds us through Army Kumar's character that letching over ladies openly is charming and sentimental. From the black hole sucking you towards the past, Murugadoss rubber bands towards the future also, creating an impression for the advanced Indian young lady: it is so charming and amusing when a bratty young lady treats her folks like her doormat.

Attempt to smother a laugh when Sumeet Raghavan conveys an ardent monolog on how the Army secures our residents, or when Army Kumar is compelled to unspool a reiteration of fill-in-the-spaces work about the Army confronting fear based oppressor invasion.

Appreciate those Aflatoon (Akshay Kumar’s action movie) style convenient cars parked for the hero to escape in, the hillarious cutting edge PC UI utilized by “hi-tech terrorists”, the immense plot openings through which Matthew McConaughey will go in Interstellar, and a finale that feels as though it was scripted by a monkey.


Akshay Kumar’s Holiday released on 6 June 2014 becoming the biggest net grosser of the first half of 2014. The movie was reported to be one of the best thrillers to come out of Bollywood. It was also reported that Akshay Kumar's career took a new turn in terms of story selection and box office success with this movie. Akshay Kumar was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actor at 60th Filmfare Awards.
